Manager of Project Manager

What is the role of the Manager of Project Manager? What are the positives or negatives with this role?

careerAlmost everything is perceptional as we each have our own little versions of reality. A really good “Leader” (vice Manager) can create a common reality from which a Team works.
According to me; one of the greatest skills any “leader” can develop is that of understanding how other people perceive things. Language, Culture, Societal Norms, Belief Systems, Personal goals & Objectives all go into forming each of our individual perspectives on any number of things. Then add in how Team Dynamics can have an effect on those things and you can really see how sometimes things get off track. I’m not even going to add in the concept of hidden agendas because then the complexity of all of these issues gets at least squared. All-in-all it is one of the reasons I hate Organizational or “Office” Politics.

What I have always enjoyed about that role is the “Mentoring” aspect. The opportunity not so much to help with the “Hard” skills, but the more softer one’s that in my opinion contribute more to the overall success of a project then the technical abilities. While it is only my opinion, this is an area that PMI falls a little short on. While one can be taught the skills, wisdom can only come from mileage. It is one of the reasons that I’m not all that found or “Certifications” or very specialized practitioners of any type. Usually their scope is just to narrow & their experiences not broad enough. However, of course that is only my opinion, perception & version or reality :)
